Variceal Banding

Variceal banding is a treatment for esophageal varices that are at risk of bursting. It’s based on the method used to treat hemorrhoids, where rubber bands are used to cut off blood flow and encourage healing.

After the band is applied, a small sore forms where the vein was banded. This sore heals within a few days or weeks. The procedure is safe and doesn’t harm the esophagus or increase pressure in the portal system. However, it can be challenging for the doctor if the vein is actively bleeding because the endoscope can block their view.
